Essential Oil of the Month

Nutmeg

myristica fragrans--Nutmeg is the kernel of the fruit of a tree native to India, but is also grown in the West Indies.  The oil is extracted using steam distillation.  In many ways Nutmeg duplicates the properties of other warming spices like Cinnamon.  Jean Valnet reccommends that nutmeg be combined with Rosemary and clove to relieve rheumatic pain. This is a very powerful blend and should be used with care because it is also very stimulating.  Nutmeg is a stimulant of the heart and circulation, so it is used in small quantities to improve cellulite.  Nutmeg is good in the winter for a warming bath.  3 drops is enough.  It is also nice in the diffusor when blended with Orange and clove.  This blend reproduces the scent of pomanders, which have been used for centuries to perfume rooms and ward off infection.

Nutmeg blends well with citrus essences, geranium, neroli, ylang ylang.  It is highly odoriferous, so use sparingly.  Use very low concentrations of Nutmeg .5% or less.  Avoid during pregnancy.
